Tips and Shortcuts for Samsung SII

BRIGHTNESS CONTROL
With auto-brightness disabled, tap & hold on notification bar, then after a moment it becomes a horizontal brightness scroll bar.
ORGANIZING APP DRAWER
Organize the apps with folders. Tap Menu, then Edit.
UNINSTALL FROM APP DRAWER
Uninstall programs from the App Drawer. Tap menu, then Edit. Programs with '-' sign can be uninstalled from there, just tap.
BROWSER AGENT
Type 'about:useragent' in address bar and tap Go.
BROWSER SHOW TABS
Pinch inwards twice (i.e. zoom out) to display all open tabs
CAMERA ZOOM
In the camera app you can use the volume buttons to zoom in and out. OR you can pinch to zoom in and out.
DIAL CONTACT
Swipe right on contact name from the Contact list.
DIAL CONTACT
Swipe right on contact name from Messaging list
DIALLER
Start spelling out the name of the contact on the phone keys to avoid scrolling through the contact list
FAST SCROLLING
In a few apps such as YouTube, Astro File Manager, Market, etc. use 3 fingers to scroll much faster.
EMAIL GROUP BY DATE
In the inbox of the Samsung email app, you can pinch to zoom out to group all emails by date, then expand individual dates or zoom in to expand all again.
GOOGLE EASTER EGG
Go to Preferences, then About phone, then tap on Android version 5 times very fast. (it's a bit hit and miss)
HOMESCREEN DOCK APPS
To change, go to Applications, tap Menu then edit. Tap & hold to move. Only Home/App. cannot be moved.
HOMESCREEN SLIDER
The homescreen identifier dots double as a slider to scroll through your homescreens.
LOCK ACTIVE SCREEN
While watching videos, tap the power button to disable taps on the screen, the touch sensitive buttons and the home button.
MOVE HOMESCREENS
From view of all homescreens, tap and hold then rearrange.
PAN TO MOVE
This also works on the Application pages.
PINCH TO ZOOM - APP DRAWER
You can also use pinch to zoom on the app drawer.
PINCH TO ZOOM - BROWSER
Do it twice in a row (pinching inwards) in the browser as a shortcut to all open tabs.
PINCH TO ZOOM - HOME
On homescreen, zoom out and see all homescreens at once.
PINCH TO ZOOM - EMAIL

RECENT PROGRAMS
Hold down the menu button to switch to a recent program or to access the task manager.

Press your home button and lock screen button (power button) at the same time to save a screenshot.
SCROLLING
You can scroll much faster on some apps such as YouTube, Astro File Manager and Market by using 3 fingers and if you scroll with 2 fingers you get precise scrolling (no scroll momentum).
SEARCH TOOL
Some Android phones have a dedicated search button, to access this tool press the Menu button and hold for a sec.
SEND TEXT
Swipe left on contact name from the contact list.
SHUTDOWN (FORCED)
Push & hold the power button and just keep holding. Probably takes about 7 secs.
TASK MANAGER
Hold down the home button to access recent programs and the task manager.
VOICE TALK
Quick access by double tapping home button (thanks Ryan)
WIDGET RESIZE
Tap and hold, then release without moving the widget location. Re-size tool appears. Does not work on all widgets. Works on: AccuWeather.com, Agenda (the first one), Ap Mobile, Bookmark, Email, Mini paper, and Picture frame.
ZOOM

Personalizing your Samsung Galaxy SII

1. How to change the default sounds in SII?
i. You need to root your phone to do this. Read http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1309293
ii. Get the Root Explorer apps to navigate into the system folders.
iii. Go to /system/media/audio/ui
iv. The following files are listed with its respective purposes:

Charger_Connection.ogg - phone starting to charge

Lock.ogg - phone lock

TW_Low_Battery.ogg - low battery warning

TW_Touch.ogg - default press button

Unlock.ogg - phone unlock

2. Battery indicator
Download Battery Status Ultimate apps to have a numbered battery status for SII. Battery power left is shown in percentage form in top left hand corner for viewing.

3. Data status
Download Data Counter widget apps to notify on your network usages. Can be setup to monitor from different dates of the month so that matches your cell provider statement date.

4. CPU and Network monitor widget
Download SysStatLive apps to have a cool widget which actually isn't that accurate but present similar graphs like the Windows Task Manager.

Installing Varnish Cache on Ubuntu

Varnish is distributed in the Ubuntu package repositories, but the version there might be out of date, and we generally recommend using the packages provided by varnish-cache.org.

To use the varnish-cache.org repository, do the following

The website is actually blocked. To be able to enter the website, edit the hosts file which is located in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

look for:
127.0.0.1 localhost

add this line after localhost above.

*if you cant save it, remove the read-only attribute of the file properties first.
attrib -r hosts

How to make xfire detect games manually

This instructions shows how to detect Left4Dead game in your pc if it is the non-steam version.
1. Edit the xfire_games.ini file which resides in your xfire installation folder eg. C:\Program Files\Xfire
2. Search for the game reference eg. Left4Dead under code number 5633 and edit the gamepath to point correctly as per your current installation which is the launcherpath and detectexe:

Note: You dont need to change the launcherdirkey registry as it does nothing as far as im concern.
3. Run your xfire.
4. Go to Tools>Options>Games>Not Installed>Left4Dead
5. Select Manual Setup and browse to your correct gamepath
6. I add this extra command line parameter so that l4d loads faster:
-console -novid +sv_allow_lobby_connect_only 0 +sv_lan 1
7. Press Apply. If you get into some error, your gamepath is incorrect or you didnt do step 2 above.

You might need to edit the xfire_games.ini over and over again each time xfire updates itself.

Editing binary files with xxd

First to hexdump the binary:
xxd -c 12 binaryfile.bin test.txt

the output to the file test.txt will be something like this:

edit the hexadecimals, then to convert the file back to binary, type:

How to solve 3x3x3 rubik's cube

Reference:
F = Turn front side of cube clockwise
U = Turn top side of cube clockwise
R = Turn right side of cube clockwise
L = Turn left side of cube clockwise
i = Turn the side of cube anticlockwise

1. Solve the front face centres and align the cross with side centres
2. Solve the side angles to match face colors and side centre colors
3. Once front side is solved, turn the solved side downwards and try to solve the second line of the cube.
To move the centre top side to the right of second line use this algorithm: U,R,Ui,Ri,Ui,Fi,U,F
To move the centre top side to the left of second line use this algorithm: Ui,L,U,Li,U,F,Ui,Fi
4. Once second line is solved, next step is to get the top side to form a cross. Use this algorithm over and over until it form a cross:
F,R,U,Ri,Ui,F
5. Now to align the top side cross color with the second line centres, at least there will be 2 sides which top side is correctly aligned with the second line.
If the correct side are opposite to each other use this algorithm:
U,R,Ui,Li,U,R,Ui,L
If the correct sides are next to each other, hold the correct side one opposite and the other on the left hand side. Use the same algorithm as above.
6. Next step is to ensure that the top side corners are in place correctly at its place but not necessarily have the correct color on top side.
Find one corner which is correct and hold it so that it would be on the bottom right of the top face. Use this algorithm over and over to get them correct:
U,R,U,Ri,U,R,U,U,Ri
If no corners are correct use the above algorithm to get one side corrected.
7. Once the corners of the top face is at the correct place, hold the uncorrected corner on the bottom right hand corner of the top side and use this algorithm to solve the uncorrected top corners:
Ri,Di,R,D
Turn the top side of the uncorrected corner and place it on the bottom right hand corner and do the same algorithm again. DO NOT FORGET THE 'D' when you do the algorithm above.

Making favourite icon for Internet Browsers

1. Get a picture of whatever u want it to be the icon.
2. Convert the file to .ico using image converter program.
3. Rename this file to favicon.ico
4. Save this file at the root of your website eg. the place where your index.html is.
The icon will be shown next to the url the website once you save it as your favourite.
